Chinese preschool for Katelyn - learning her shapes and colors! Her favorite shape is the rectangle, and I think she's finally learning how to say diamond in Chinese too. Baby steps! She's starting to resist going to Chinese school, which is quite a bummer. I may try the Karis one after the 5 weeks session is up here. We'll see. She starts Montessori June 1st with Tue-Wed-Thur so we'll have Mon/Fridays open.
After Chinese school we went to the market to pick up some ingredients for dinner that night. I was going to make SALMON! How very exciting. Her favorite part is counting the number of spigots in the fountain.
Off to pick up Tyler. Katelyn saw Kendall in a pretty dress when we got out of the car and started whining that she wanted to wear a dress too. Doh! Luckily, I had a tutu in the back in the car. Why it's there I have no idea, but what a lifesaver! We put it on and she was a happy camper. Yay! The girls hung out and played on the playground. Check them out hanging out! Liv (the middle one) turns 4 in May and Kendall turns 4 in June. Almost a whole year older than Katelyn and she's just as big as them!
Dinner that night was a SUCCESS! Tyler loved it so much that he had seconds and thirds, and he even ate the rest off Katelyn's plate (which is huge since he's a germaphobe when it comes to Katelyn). I asked him what he wanted for dinner the next night and he said the same fish we had tonight! This picture isn't too appealing but basically I just marinated it in olive oil and some spices with lemon wedges. Then put the whole thing sealed in aluminum foil into the oven! So delicious and moist - not dry at all! I froze the remaining uncooked salmon (from Costco) to make again next week.
The kids had gotten baby chicks into the classroom the week before since they have been learning about farm life. Super cute, and a few had hatched the night before! Tyler was very excited to show me the baby chicks when I volunteered in the classroom on Tuesday. They were SO little and their feathers were all still wet. Ahhh!
Tuesday night I headed out with my friend Connie to have dinner with some friends at Juliette's Bar and Kitchen in Newport Beach. We got together to celebrate our friend Janet's birthday. One of the moms I hadn't met before but she told me that she remembered chatting with me before while we were waiting with our families for a table at Shik do Rak! How random huh! Good times with the fellow mommies.
Wednesday it rained. LOVE rain. The girls were excited to use their little umbrellas. Katelyn even got to go into the classroom real quick and see the cute little baby chicks! I didn't have a jacket for her in the car that had a hood so I convinced her to wear Tyler's jacket. It's gotten too small for him and hence is a perfect fit for her!
On Thursday Katelyn got her tie-dye shirt from ICDC. Apparently they helped make it with the teacher. She loved it so much she wanted to wear it the next day too!
Oh, and look! I cooked again on Thursday! Amazing, no? I used the crock pot and made chicken taco meat. What a hit with the kids! Might have been their first time having taco shells actually. We had two very happy campers. Their happiness and appreciation make cooking all the more worth while. We'll have to try to keep it up.
With Teacher's Appreciation Week coming up, I had to scramble to get some thank you cards made for Katelyn's teacher. They were actually due earlier in the week on Monday but I was a total procrastinator. Busted out my trusty little Cricut mini and made these cute little easy cards. I was TOTALLY rushing to get them done in time to drop them off when I picked up Katelyn. Totally last minute. Each teacher will get a little laminated booklet with all the cards in them.
After ballet on Thursday we all headed to Tang 190 for dinner. It was, crazy. 4 families - 17 people. We took up almost half the restaurant it seemed! Plus add in an unexpected random (?) coincidental (??) bump in with someone we would all rather avoid ... added stress. I still like the Korean soup though! Here's Katelyn and Kendall hanging out after they finished eating. The moms sat on one table with a couple of the girls and the dads sat at the big table with all the boys and the other little girls!
Like my new hat? Katelyn does!
On Friday we're back at Chinese school. Look at Katelyn learning the word 'person'! She always looks like she's having fun when I go to pick her up. Hopefully she's learning some Chinese!
Friday afternoon after naps, we headed over to my friend Bonnie's place. What we had planned to be a quick eyelash touchup ended up taking forever! Our original schedule got thrown off and we were there for much longer than anticipated. Another mommy friend Linda was there too. Between them getting full sets and my touch up, plus 6 kids between us - it was crazy! Will have to plan better next time. Here's Tyler and Kobi drawing.
Saturday! In the morning I took Tyler to the William Woollet Aquatic Center for his friend Sonali's birthday party. Here they are in the pool. Will took Katelyn over to see his parents. Love this place for a birthday party - I didn't have to get in! They cleared the whole pool for the kids and also provided lifeguards. The deepest the pool got was 4 1/2 feet.
I was really un-optimistic about Tyler's swimming skills after last weekend's pool visit. I had actually purchased an additional 8 lessons just that morning at Waterworks. There's a slide at the pool here where I made sure that the dad in the water knew that Tyler couldn't swim. I even told the lifeguard too! But Tyler really surprised me. After a few times going on the slide and being lifted up by the dad, he was ready to do it all by himself! I didn't know this though, and saw him going down the slide without the dad ready to catch him. I almost had a heart attack, but as I was running over I saw that he was ... swimming?! Apparently he remembered how after all this time! The dad (Halim, a judge!) assured me that he had seen Tyler do it a few times before he stopped catching him. Yay Tyler!
Video of Tyler riding the slide himself:
Birthday cake fun! Met a couple of cool moms that day. One even has a young son who is in the same Judo class as Bruno Mars' nephew. SWOON!
Whew, the pool can be exhausting. Even with a thick layer of sunblock I think Tyler got a few shades darker. Back at home we put them both down for naps and Tyler went down quick. The pool and sun combination is quite energy depleting!
After naps (had to wake Katelyn up) we headed over to Harvard Square Park to cheer on Tyler's friends' baseball game. Actually really enjoyable to watch the game when your own kid isn't there!
Stayed at the game for a bit and then headed over to our friend Taylor's daughter Arden's 6th birthday party in Woodbury. Bungee jumping! Their son had this at his birthday last year and Tyler did it but was pretty scared. Same thing this year - he was fine to jump on it but his laughs bordered on fearful screaming. Katelyn was VERY excited to go on it.
See the fear?
Video of Tyler's one attempt on the bungee jumper:
Katelyn's turn!
It was a lot of giggling, scared giggling.
Video of KK's first time on the bungee jumper:
She didn't want to go too high though.
Taco catering! Tyler and Kaden placed an order themselves with the cook for a cheese quesadilla.
Then they played together upstairs.
Katelyn, meanwhile, decided she wanted to go on the bungee jumper again! She motioned to the guy and said: "I have something to tell you. Not too HIGH!!". Haha!
The boys were keeping themselves occupied by doing push ups in order to get a ball back.
Then all the kids watched Monster's Inc upstairs while the adults hung out downstairs and drank and socialized. Always a good time at their parties! I drank wine / sangria that night - no vodka!
There was a failed attempt at making friendship bracelets too.
Sunday morning. Very early. We woke up and hit the road to the San Diego Zoo. Got there by 9am, which meant we left around 7:30am! The early morning plus the wine from the night before: not a good combo. Long drive and I wasn't even driving. It was really chilly though, which I was very excited about. Katelyn insisted on wearing her jacket backwards.
Our passes were about to expire so we needed to go one more time before they did. This was literally the last weekend before they expired, so we really put it off to the last minute!
Joined by Katelyn's school BFF Harmony and her mom Yoko.
We even saw a cheetah taking a stroll on a leash!
R is for rhino.
The kids favorite activity - flattening pennies.
Pandas!
Safari Tyler! By now it had gotten really hot. Blah.
We were soon joined by Katelyn's other school friend Riley. The girls are so cute together. Even though Katelyn is only there two days a week, she has a good time playing with her friends. Although Harmony and Riley together are super crazy!
Hippo butt!
The girls found a broken bench that would rock back and forth. They had a ton of fun on this 'roller coaster'.
Hilarious monkey photos of Tyler.
F is for Flamingo!
The kids cooled off with frozen lemonade. Each!
By 1pm Katelyn was knocked out in the stroller. I was ready to knock out too.
We checked out some more animals and then headed towards the exit by 3pm. OMG we were BEAT! Tyler kept almost falling asleep on the rollerboard of the stroller, poor kid. Katelyn woke up in time to take some more photos.
Fun times!
I'd like to never go again to the zoo when it's warm. It's no fun. Hate the heat!
