Happy early Thanksgiving everyone! Something about this cold weather has made me really want to start getting decorations for Christmas. I've been enjoying some warm Trader Joe's Spiced Apple Cider at night, and it is totally putting me into the holiday mood!
Katelyn is having some strange issues going on. Thursday she was sent home from school because she threw up. Really strange, since she had no other symptoms going on. No fever, lethargy, nothing. I was planning to go up to my mom's place already so I decided to bring her along. She was fine all day, running around and playing, and even seemed to have a good appetite. On the drive home she fell asleep. When we were almost home, I watched her (from my rearview mirror) wake up groggily, throw up, and go back to sleep. Not even a cry. REALLY weird. Then later that evening she was running around playing and threw up again, then off to playing. Just really weird behavior. No flu or any other symptoms. The next morning it was as if it never happened. She slept almost 14 hours that night, and I finally went in to rouse her at 11am so that we could get her and Tyler dropped off at school. (Will was home since we had planned to go up to the Bay Area but changed our minds last minute). Apparently she was acting tired and not "engaging" in activities, and didn't want to go down for a nap with the other kids at noon (I could have told them that!). I was pretty annoyed that they felt this was a good enough reason to send her home though. Fast forward through a weekend with no issues from her, on Monday she THREW UP AGAIN at school. What! What is going on! We picked her up but I was pretty annoyed that they said I couldn't bring her back to school until Wednesday. It was obvious she wasn't sick and maybe something going on with food allergies? Regardless, I was really annoyed and even sat down with one of the school directors. We'll see how things pan out. Alright! Enough with my vent!
While at my mom's place, I found this cute pumpkin costume. Katelyn LOVES pumpkins right now and was really happily running around in it. Unfortunately the only photo I got was one where she looks miserable. I promise she liked it!
At my mom's place, Katelyn found this little koala stuffed bear. I remember hugging this exact bear when I was little! Well, Kareen and I each had one so I'm not sure who's this one was, but Katelyn took quite a liking to it! She was happily lugging it around all over the house when we got home too.
Saturday. Since we weren't headed up to the Bay Area anymore, we were able to take Tyler to his first ever Taekwondo competition. We missed the last one a few months ago since Tyler was sick and were really excited about going this time. The competition took place at the Del Mar fairgrounds - pretty much San Diego. I was excited and nervous at the same time, not only about how Tyler was going to do, but also if Katelyn was going to behave or not (I had visions of her screaming and running around wildly). Luckily she was PERFECT and chilled in her stroller almost the whole time! It really gave us the opportunity to focus on Tyler.
Tons of people there! They got all the Tiny Tigers together first. Tiny Tigers are the younger kids, usually under 7. We were very lucky since two of Tyler's normal teachers were there (Miss Nicole and Mr. Ben). Thank goodness too. Will took Tyler to the restroom when we got there. While they were in there, the announcement came out that they were starting to line up the Tiny Tigers. Ack! Tyler did not like being rushed over to his ring, he wanted to watch the other kids and take some time to get adjusted. If it wasn't for Miss Nicole talking to him, I think he might have had a meltdown! Crisis averted!
After sitting through opening ceremonies, the Tiny Tigers group were divided into smaller subgroups, and then moved to their separate rings. Tyler's group consisted mostly of kids from his Taekwondo class, which was great since he felt more comfortable with them.
Go TYLER! He was so focused. I was so proud.
Video of Tyler performing his moves. Check out his kicks! The best part of the video is his confusion of where to sit when he finished:
Afterward the kids all got presented a card to pick up their trophies. Tyler got rewarded "highest kicks!". He was very excited about his card.
My little boy's first trophy! For an extra $5 they even engraved their names on it. :)
Tyler and one of the other kids in his class. He's 6 or 7 I think. They call the other kid "big Tyler" and ours is "little Tyler".
Rain this weekend! The kids were going stir crazy in the house so we let them run around outside a bit with their umbrellas.
Saturday night we had our old nanny come by to babysit. It was so good seeing her again, I hadn't seen her since she stopped working for us around the end of August (K started full time school in September). It was like she never left and Katelyn was so giggly and friendly with her.
Will and I had an nice and wonderful dinner at our favorite prime rib spot - Five Crowns - in Corona del Mar. Our dinner reservation was actually at 7:30pm - which is crazy since we usually eat by 6pm with the kids. We picked up Sprinkles cupcakes beforehand and enjoyed them overlooking the Corona del Mar beach afterward. Happy 7 years honey!
Sunday morning we headed down to Dana Point to visit the Ocean Institute. I had been wanting to check it out and was prepared for it not to be too great (thanks Yelp!). Since we weren't expecting much, I wasn't too disappointed. Tyler really liked looking through the microscope at the moving plankton.
Katelyn liked listening to big shells.
The kids even got in some coloring time.
This tank bubble was cool, but it would have been cooler if there were a few more fish in it.
Tyler's favorite part was watching one of the marine biologists dissect a squid. It was actually quite interesting! He was the only kid so he got to ask questions and have one-on-one attention. I was amazed that he was able to keep his attention focused the whole time.
After the Institute, we walked around near the ocean. It was a beautiful day!
We also checked out the Pilgrim ship (included with our admission to the Institute). This is the same ship that my class took a fieldtrip to during elementary school after reading "Two Years Before the Mast". I think kids usually spend the night here but our class just spent the day. I remember being "First Mate" or something and leading my "crew" in singing sailor songs or something. They still do those fieldtrips! The kids lost interest pretty quick though.
Monday morning Will and I kept celebrating our anniversary weekend by heading to Knott's Berry Farm! We have passes (they were super cheap) but never get to go on any of the roller coasters when we visit with the kids. We did almost all of them (a couple were closed) in less than 2 hours!
Tuesday I took Katelyn to see her pediatric allergist to see if we could figure out what was going on. I was not too impressed with his responses and am actually thinking of changing doctors. I'm not sure if I just need more coddling or if there's just not much we can do to really pinpoint her allergy issues. Basically he just said to continue avoiding the list of supposedly allergic foods. Ugh. Katelyn did have a fun time waiting in their waiting room though.
Back at Taekwondo this week, the kids were getting ready for graduation. They even got to play with some nunchucks! Here's also a photo of Tyler and Mr. Do, the head of their ATA school. I found out that this week that Mr. Do is only 30!
Wednesday at Pre-4 was Stone Soup day. All the kids brought in a separate ingredient (we were onions) and the teachers made a big stew. They invited the parents to join for lunch that day. The soup was yummy and it was nice hanging out with the other parents. Here are the kids waiting for their turn to go wash their hands and get seated at the lunch tables. The teachers had prepared breads, cookies and pumpkin pie too!
Tyler's (fav) teacher Vanessa was really proud of Tyler's first trophy too. She printed the photo out and had Tyler share with his class. How wonderful it is when your kids' teachers do things like this, makes us realize how much they really care.
This week I picked up Tyler a little earlier one day and took him to Boomers. He has been asking forever and we had to postpone a couple times since Katelyn was being sent home so much. He LOVES the go karting there. I can still see his cute little face next to mine, hair blowing back since we're going so fast, cheeks red from the wind, and smiling ear-to-ear telling me to go faster. Adorable. He was also finally tall enough to drive the "little thunder" go karts too. It was his first time really driving anything like this by himself (the little kid cars at LegoLand don't count) and he was surprisingly good! He was able to avoid his friend Kaden too and squeeze through small spaces!

And finally, a card that one of Tyler's girlfriends made from school. I think she has a crush!

I was going to make a comment about the card being from "one" of Tyler's girlfriends, but the driving is really impressive!! For his first time out, he got the turns well and also slotted himself pretty good when Kaden was stopped.
Great job, Tyler!!
