Happy Birthday to ME! 31 years have come and gone. This birthday wasn't much of a milestone, just another year zooming by. Last year Katelyn was 6 months and I was chained to her because of nursing. This year, she's an independent little character. Happy Birthday to Will too! I love that our birthdays are so close together - this used to lead to joint multiple celebrations with our friends during college, but now that we're older we just like to celebrate quietly together. This year though - we went to Vegas to celebrate and it was WONDERFUL! More about that later...
Will took a couple days off work - we planned to leave Friday morning and Thursday we spent the day together without the kids. We had a yummy lunch at Gyu-kaku and then took Tyler to his taekwondo class. Tyler had a spider drawn on his arm that day at school (think face paint style) and started fussing a little when we got to his taekwondo class. When he gets upset, he wipes at his eyes, even though there aren't any tears. Result? Two black raccoon eyes from the spider! This photo I took after he had wiped most of it away. Unibrow.
Katelyn is SUCH her own little person now. She has such a personality and I love watching her and wondering what she's thinking. She is silly and happy and excited about everything. But, she's also quite adamant and grumpy when she doesn't get what she wants. She gives a really good upset face.
But then she giggles at me while she drinks her milk and I forget all about that grumpy face! Tyler too!
Video of Tyler chatting at dinner. This video isn't about much in particular, but I just like to try to capture the kids interacting at this young age. I love the way Tyler reasons things out, and he really does say the most random things at times!
Thursday night we got everything packed up. Actually, it was more work packing for the kids' first weekend away from home. I was quite nervous but excited - I have almost NEVER been away from Katelyn over night. There was only 1 time and that was 1 overnight away in San Diego for my friend's birthday. Will, on the other hand, has had quite a few business travels that have kept him away 4-5 days at a time from the kids. Baby steps for me. When Tyler was almost 2, Will and I did go on 2 separate snowboarding trips, and my in-laws watched him for us. Seems like such a long time ago. This was going to be our first time away together from the kids since then! And...it was a GREAT and much needed weekend. So excited! After dropping the kids off at school Friday morning, Will and I hit the road. 4 hours to Vegas, with a stop at Baker for their strawberry shake of course!
Our room at Aria - ultra high tech with everything controllable from the touch pad next to our bed. Thanks to our awesome friend Antonio for getting us the hook up on the price! (Or we probably would have been staying at Imperial Palace or something. Gulp.)
After checking in (and a short nap for Will), we headed a couple freeway exits down to meet up with our friends Amy and Sean. They are Will's friends from college and they have a little 4 month old boy named Austin. BABY Fever. Sigh. It was good seeing them and catching up. We also had dinner with them before rushing back to the Strip to change and get to the I Heart Radio music concert that night.
And... we're there! MGM Grand Convention Center. SO excited. Floor seats (although next time I need to be closer to the front!). We were very excited, there was a great line up that night. I was really only interested in Bruno Mars. Swoon! Lame thing was that everyone stood up during the concert, so I couldn't see anything anyway. LAME!
Black Eyed Peas. They are so tiny on the left.
A couple of non-costumed Jabawokeez performed with them at the end.
Hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
Next up: Kelly Clarkson.
Brunoooooooooo!
Video of Bruno. I can't wait to see him in person next, and much closer!:
Next up Carrie Underwood!
This was kind of exciting - that fighter guy Tito Ortiz and his girlfriend (wife?) ex-porn star Jenna Jameson walked by us a couple times. Only celebrity sighting of the night.
Next up was Jane's Addiction - but they were SO loud that I had to leave for a bit since I was getting a headache. Came back in time for Coldplay. They were great!
Then Alicia Keys.
And then Jay-Z!
Whew, what a night, the concert ended around midnight and we were really tired by then. Plus my feet were killing me from all the standing we did.
I have no idea how I managed to walk back to our hotel - the taxi line at MGM was ridiculous so I suffered through it. The coffee helped!
Saturday morning. Totally slept in, and it was W O N D E R F U L !!! We finally dragged ourselves out of bed and headed to Cosmopolitan for their buffet lunch at Wicked Spoon. The Cosmopolitan is a beautiful swanky boutique style casino - it was really nice! Think Ultra-Lux with chandeliers everywhere and stuff.
I honestly don't even really remember what we did on Saturday. We just relaxed, gambled and walked around. We also got tickets to see O that night - it's been around forever and we've never seen it! Third row seats - sweet! I was very excited! We walked around in the afternoon and I think we even took a nap!
Dinner was at Social House at the City Center - perfectly located right next to Aria. I had probably the best salmon avocado roll ever there - which was really surprising to me!
Off to see O! We watched the 7:30pm showing so we wouldn't be too exhausted the next day. I loved it - the pool is such a cool feature! I did ask Will afterward what the theme was though, since there really didn't seem to be anything connecting the story, but the acrobatics were still really amazing! Plus sitting in the 3rd row made it even more exciting since we could see the performers' facial expressions so clearly.
After the show, it was perfect timing to watch the O Bellagio fountains. They were performing to the Moulin Rouge song Come What May (Kareen, you would have loved it!). Sunday morning we grabbed a quick brunch buffet and then headed home. It was HARD to be back to reality but it was such a welcome and rejuvenating weekend. The kids were fine, until, apparently, Sunday morning when they really started missing us. Sigh. I'm looking forward to more weekend getaways with Will in the future!! Happy Birthday to us!
I picked up Katelyn one day and they were outside having buggy rides. As soon as she saw me she wanted off. She loves school though, just this morning I dropped her off and she didn't even take a second look at me before she ran straight outside into the yard to play!
Happy Birthday to me! This is the first year in who knows how long that I actually went and had lunch with my parents on my birthday. Could be that I have always been in school or working of course, and now that I am a bum I have unlimited amounts of free time. It was great seeing them though, and also my sister in law and their little baby!
Wednesday night we went to dinner at Sushilicious. I'm not fancy, hah! Plus it's quite kid friendly and not pricey. Katelyn was happily eating the dried seaweed.
Wonderful Will got me a yummy birthday cake that we all enjoyed together that night. Tyler ate so much that he had a stomach ache!
And the best part? Tyler made me a birthday card at school. I love my Tyler! Inside it said 'I Love You". Love him!
Video of Tyler's saying happy birthday to mama. He's silly!:
Another week, another year. Kind of sucks to be getting older but I can't complain much. Life is pretty wonderful and I have a wonderful little family. :)
