Mighty Mustang Week, Tyler's First Piano Recital, and Chinese New Year! (Week 291/153)

This week Tyler celebrated his 100th day of Kindergarten.  They actually celebrated on the Friday that we weren't in school (priorities, you know!) but I still managed to grab a shot of Tyler's presentation when I volunteered the following Tuesday.  The project was to have the kids practice counting to 100 and using 100 of something.  Those are 'balloons' with plastic star pieces, 20 in each colored balloon.

Tyler's kindergarten teacher also decided that this would be the week that Tyler would be the Mighty Mustang.  The Mighty Mustang is a different child in the class each week, and is usually reserved for a kid during the week of their birthday.  But since Tyler's birthday is after school ends and there didn't happen to be a birthday this week, THIS was Tyler's week.  Very inopportune time since being the Mighty Mustang requires 1) filling out a "my favorites" book - easy and quick, 2) writing a page about taking the Mighty Mustang stuffed animal somewhere special and having a picture to go with it  - perfect since we took photos of Tyler snowboarding with the stuffed animal - but then needed to get the photos printed out ASAP and 3) complete a Mighty Mustang poster - needed more photos printed out!  And this was all due on the day that we got back.  So after we got back Monday evening, I was half zombied-out trying to work on this stuff for Tyler.  Not very fun.

But of course it all came out fine.  Here are his projects:

On Thursday of your Mighty Mustang week, the family of the Mighty Mustang is invited to meet the class and read a story to the kids.  Since I volunteer every Tuesday, we figured it would be nice for the kids to see Will for a change.  We brought a few books for the kids to choose and the choice was overwhelmingly the Star Wars book - even from the girls!  Afterward the kids got to ask Will and Tyler silly questions.

Thursday was also Katelyn's teacher Miss Kristie's last day at ICDC.  She is going on maternity leave.

And then ballet!

And then a last minute dinner with the Garners at the Habbit.

Friday Katelyn and I had a little mini girl's day at the Spectrum and had her favorite - shu mai at Capital seafood.

Then Saturday was Tyler's basketball game.  Love him in basketball.

Silly boys.

It was their last game of the season and afterward we headed over to Lamppost Pizza for their after party.  The boys were obsessed with the little video game area.

We had to leave early from the party so we could get the kids down for a quick nap.  It was going to be a busy day!  Had to wake up the kids early (was holding my breath about Katelyn, but she was too tired to notice) and drive down to Costa Mesa / Newport Beach area for Tyler's first piano recital at a church off of Newport Blvd.  Will's parents met us there.  How cute is Katelyn's little dress??

I was very concerned but I knew Tyler knew his song.  They encouraged the kids to go up and test out the piano a little so that it wouldn't feel so different to them when it was actually time for the recital.  Tyler refused.  Uh-oh.  No amount of coaxing or bribing or threatening was getting him up there.  Uh-oh.  I had a bad feeling about this.  Then they lined up the kids in their order of performance and Tyler was sitting away from us.  I was VERY worried.

This is him as the boy before him is about to go.

Check out his face as the boy is done and goes to sit down.

The teacher introduced Tyler and ... he got up, walked up there, took a deep bow...

.. and played his songs PERFECTLY!!  Not a wrong note at all!  A little on the slow end, but I'm not complaining!  I was SO proud.

Video of Tyler's recital:

Katelyn meanwhile had gotten restless and was walking around the church with grandpa.  Doesn't she look like she's from the 70s or something?

Group picture of the recital participants at the end.  There were actually 3 recitals that day and this was the middle one.

Even got some cute phot opps of Tyler next to the piano afterward.

Then it was off to the church gym next door for the reception.  Here's Tyler and his teacher Mrs. Miranda Wu.

And with his buddy Luke!

After heading home and changing, we headed over to my friend Paula's house to hang out with the Kumon group for a little.  Then we headed over to Will's parent's place for dinner.  Since it was Chinese New Year's Eve, it was very important that we had dinner with them.  The kids were happy to eat lots of their favorite foods.

... and of course get their red envelopes from the grandparents!

Katelyn started getting a bit fussy and said that she wanted to go home.  Smart girl - totally gave us an out!  We headed back over to Paula's place afterward.  I had told the others that we would be back so thank goodness we were able to keep our promise.

The kid were getting really excited as we lined them up in order of age.  14 kids between the 6 families, including 2 sets of twins!  Lots of kids to line up.  Then it was time to get their red envelopes!  It was SO much fun watching the kids go around to all the moms and get their $$.

Something funny that Owen must have said to Katelyn.

Katelyn, being the youngest, got to go first (I thought it was the other way around, but whatever).

Then the kids all excitedly sat in a circle and counted all their $$.

Sunday.  For lunch we had a quick bite to eat at Will's parents place.  Eating leftovers is good luck I guess for the actual Chinese New Year's day.

Then after naps, we headed over to my parents' place in Hacienda Heights for dinner with my parents, my brother's family, and Wills parents again.  I bribed Tyler into wearing Will's old Chinese jacket.  How cute are they?

My grandmother was there too and she passed out some red envelopes to the kids.

Highlight of the evening: the kids having their own 'kids' table separate from the adults.  LOVE that they are old enough for this.

Quick photo opp with my brother Lindon.

Landon, my nephew, was super sweet to me.  He wanted me to hold him and would even put his head down on my shoulder and hug me tight.  Awwwww.

Tyler gave a mini recital to my parents (they weren't able to make his recital since they just got back from Houston visiting my older sister the day before).

Sweet KK with my mom.

...and with her favorite grandparent - Will's dad!

Overload of red perhaps?

Will and I didn't get the memo - we're more maroon than red!

Happy Chinese New Year everyone!
