Dentist, Carlsbad Flower Fields, SD Zoo, and Snow Valley... (Week 248/110)

Whew, what a week this was!  Very busy, as usual!  We never seem to have much downtime, but I guess that's what happens when you have kids.  It's amazing watching them go through life experiencing new things.  We love to document everything that goes on!  They are so wonderful.  When I come back from the gym in the morning, they are so excited to see me.  They both will jump up in bed and yell "mommy!" and want hugs.  Katelyn will say "I want big hug!".  Sometimes I'll watch her from the rear-view mirror when I'm driving and when she catches me she'll giggle and smile.  They are so wonderful.

Monday we took the kids to the dentist.  It was a very smooth visit and the kids didn't have any cavities or anything.  They played some games in the waiting room and were great during their cleanings.  Katelyn watched Tyler from her seat and was great at sitting there and opening her little mouth wide.

After the dentist appointment, we grabbed a quick Ramen dinner and then some dessert at Layer Cake bakery.  It was turning out to be a nice and smooth day.  Until we got home.  Somehow, I have no idea how, Tyler closed the car door on his finger.  The scream I heard was one that no parent ever wants to hear.  He totally freaked out and wouldn't even let us put ice on it.  Poor thing.  We decided to go to the ER anyway to be sure nothing was broken.  Next time we'll go to Urgent Care since the ER trip took FOREVER and cost quite a lot of $$.  He hated getting his blood pressure checked (the arm squeezing) but calmed down pretty quick after that.  The waiting around was horrible since Katelyn was not in a very accommodating mood.  Thank goodness nothing was broken.  He even got a little Snoopy from the guy who checked us in.  Snoopy is now in his regular roundup of stuff that he brings to our room each morning.  By the end of the visit the kids were playing with little face masks to keep them occupied.

Tuesday I had a much needed lychee saketini night with my friend Yoko.  She's a fellow mom (her daughter is in Katelyn's class) and we always have a good time when we hang out.  Sometimes you just need someone to complain and whine to, we are perfect for each other in that sense!

The next day I met up with Mariam for lunch at Boiling Point.  I think it was kind of rainy that day.  It's always nice hanging out and catching up!  I think she got sick from her soup though.  Mental note: do not order the seafood hot pot.

Wednesday afternoon I took Tyler for a trial piano lesson with Ms. Debbie Kang.  She teaches one of my friend's kids and she is less expensive than the other teacher I was planning on taking Tyler to.  Plus she is younger which I think Tyler responds better to.  Tyler really impressed her, and myself by focusing and listening.  Ms. Debbie kept saying how surprised she was that he was only 4.  I think we'll start him in May once his tennis/soccer classes end.

I redid Mojo's room this week - cleaned it up and got him some new stuff.  I figure that he is not going anywhere so we need to make his living situation nicer and more comfortable.  I bought him a cat bed from Target... and Katelyn decided to make herself comfortable in it!  I've seen Mojo in it taking naps - I hope he's happier these days.

Friday I met up with my friends Lisa and Connie for coffee and lunch, and we decided to take the kids up to the snow on Sunday.  There had been heavy rain this week which meant new snow!  I had been feeling really guilty that we hadn't had a chance to take Tyler up this season (I was so preoccupied with my exams) and even more guilty that Katelyn is 2+ and we hadn't taken her up EVER!  I stopped by REI that afternoon and picked up some snow gear for them on clearance.  I love sales!  Katelyn was excited to try out her bib and jacket.  How cute is she!

Saturday.  The beginning of a long and busy weekend.  We headed out in the morning to the Carlsbad Flower Fields.  I've wanted to go there ever since we moved down to Irvine in 2004, but we never got around to it.  Today was perfect since we were meeting friends later in the day at the San Diego Zoo and the Flower Fields is on the way.  It was so windy that Tyler agreed to wear his puffy jacket over his normal jacket (which doesn't sound like a big deal, but it is for him) AND kept it on in the car (which is unheard of.  This kid doesn't wear any type of jacket in his carseat)!  It was quite chilly but the fields were really quite amazing.  The kids were excited to look for orange flags throughout the fields to get stamps on too.

Love all the rununculus!  They are a giant rununculus strain, and they were beautiful!

Family picture in the Fields!

My iPhone takes quite vibrant photos, doesn't it?

They had a Sweet Pea maze as well.  It was quite large and a little confusing.  Good thing we had Will on the outside to guide us.  We ended up just picking the kids up and handing them over  to the exit since the maze was taking too long!

Still morning!  We headed to the Zoo and met up with our friends for a quick lunch beforehand at the Tea Pavilion in Balboa Park.  This was Katelyn's first time at the SD Zoo!  She was very excited about seeing all the different animals.

My favorite animal of the day - the Secretary Bird.  The picture doesn't show how large it really is.  It really reminded me of the chocobo birds in Final Fantasy.

Here are the kids with llamas.  Not very zoo-y, I know.

The SD zoo is so huge that we barely saw half of it - the kids didn't seem to mind though, there were so many animals to be seen.  It would sprinkle periodically but nothing too bad.  We did need to take shelter for a bit at one point, but we watched the hippos playing with a monkey to pass the time!

A must-see at the SD zoo - the pandas!

My mommy friend Amy and I.

Tyler saw Will taking pictures and started making silly faces.

I was wondering what the kids were staring at so intently...turns out there was a fancy alligator/crocodile right there in the water!  Looking underwater you could see him right up against the window with all his sharp teeth.  Above water you could only see his eyes sticking through - he was totally still.

After a while Katelyn didn't feel like riding in her stroller anymore.  She wanted to ride on the rollerboard on our stroller but Tyler was already on it.  No problems, she caught a ride with our friend Nick (they have the same stroller as us).

Near the end of the day Tyler encountered a free roaming peacock.  He was very excited and got real close to it!

Rain!

Here's Katelyn with Alexis and Kaitlyn.  These girls are both 3+, but Katelyn loves to play with them.  She probably weighs more than both of them too.

Tyler goofing off.  I was worried he'd be bored since the only other boy was only 11 months old, but he had a good time nonetheless.

After the zoo we went to dinner at a local restaurant called Hash House A-Go-Go.  OMG their portions were ridiculously huge.  Like Claim Jumpers style or something!  We were all pretty exhausted by the end of the day.  I had no idea we would be out so late - we didn't get back until almost 9pm!  The kids didn't get baths and were put right to bed.  Katelyn woke up and was VERY upset but I managed to calm her down from her screaming and she knocked out pretty quick.  Mental note: always keep a pair of pajamas for the kids in the car!  We had a good time though so it was worth it!

Sunday.  Are we insane or what?  Bright and early (after scrambling to get all the snow gear together) we headed up to Snow Valley (a SoCal snow resort in Running Springs right outside of Big Bear that I had never heard of).  This was one of the few snow resorts that were still open this late in the season.  The kids were excited!

Look how bundled up they were!  We put Tyler in a ski school that was 930-12pm and we had plans to go sledding at their snow play area.  Unfortunately the lift for the tubing was closed and the hill to climb looked ridiculous.  We ended up just hanging out and watching Tyler and his friend Elijah take their lessons.

Tyler was by himself in the beginning of the class so his instructor (also named Tyler!) took him up the lift by himself.  It was so cute to watch!

Then Tyler's friend Elijah joined in.

Katelyn watched Yo Gabba Gabba with Zachary (Elijah's little brother) for a bit before they came out to play in the snow.  She took an instant liking to Auntie Lisa too!

How cute are Elijah and Tyler!

Katelyn loved the snow, especially snowballs.  She liked to find them and step on them until they were smushed.

Video of Katelyn making a snowman:

Snow angels!  When I told her to flap her wings she first flapped them in front of her, over her chest.  heehee.

I needed to demonstrate.

I was quite impressed that Tyler lasted as long as he did.  Last year we only did a 1 hr private lesson and then took him up the mountain with us.  He was starting to look tired by the end of the 2 1/2 hrs.

Video of Tyler in his ski class:

Video of Katelyn walking and falling in the snow.  Love this one!  She's so bulky that she falls flat on her back at one point and goes "whoahh!" and then giggles!

After the class the boys played in the snow for a bit.  We were planning on getting lunch right after but the boys hadn't had any chance at all to play yet!  They had a great time throwing snowballs at each other.  Lunch was a bit challenging since everyone was tired but we made it through.  The worse part of the day? I got a speeding ticket!  Talk about total horrible bad luck.  The cop just happened to have his radar gun on me when everyone else was going the same speed.  I'm still annoyed thinking about it.  ... Anyway, what a weekend!  We were so tired but it was worth it! :)
