Happy Halloween!.. (Week 225/87)

Happy Halloween!  Prepare for a long post of Halloween festivities!  This was our first year enjoying the full swing of Halloween activities - Tyler was excited about his costume and Katelyn would happily point out all the pumpkins she saw.  It was unfortunate that I was sick this entire week.  This cold has really gotten the best of me, and I've been coughing and suffering from severe congestion.  There's no time to rest when you have kids though!

First up, this weekend (the weekend right before Halloween) we headed to our new friend Agnes/Nick's home on Saturday morning for a playdate and pumpkin carving.  I was really looking forward to the pumpkin carving just so I could get the yummy pumpkin seeds to roast!  Tyler was looking forward to playing with his friend Dylan, and I knew Katelyn wouldn't have a problem hanging out with the older girls (almost 3 year olds Madison, Kaitlyn and Alexis).  The kids even got to decorate sugar cookies with icing and sprinkles.  Tyler wasn't so interested (he took one bite and was done) but Katelyn was SO excited about it.  Even though I knew she'd probably have some sort of reaction to the cookies/topping, I let her decorate one with chocolate icing and orange pumpkin sprinkles.  You can only deny a toddler so much!  The dads got right down to business and started carving the pumpkins.  Katelyn L-O-V-E-D her sugar cookie and ate the entire thing. The moms got to chat/hang out and the finished pumpkins came out really cute too.

That afternoon we stopped by the Woodbury East park real quick (it was a really nice day) before we headed over to my in-law's home for dinner.

The kids do love swings!  Here's a video of Katelyn giggling on them.

That night Katelyn thought it was so funny to pretend try to climb out of her bouncer and then fall backward.  Here's a short video.  I love her imagination, especially when she's pretending to cook for us (upcoming purchase for her: a toy kitchen!).

How amazing is Will at pumpkin carving?  Loved how R2D2 and Hello Kitty came out!  (Later on we would get many compliments from trick or treaters at our door.)

Sunday morning, bright and early (of course) we headed to Knott's Scary Farm.  We have Season passes that expire at the end of the year and I really wanted to go to "Camp Spooky".  We've gone a few times before but Katelyn was always really small and just watched Tyler ride the different rides.  This time she started getting really upset when Tyler would go on a ride and she couldn't.  So sad!  Then we found out that some of these Camp Snoopy rides didn't have a height requirement, and Katelyn could actually go on them!  Katelyn was so happy!  Her first ride was a car ride, and while she didn't look so excited once she got in with Will, she was really focused and just happy to try it out after watching Tyler go first.  Same with the tumbler ride where she sat with Tyler.  Their favorite thing was probably the giant Snoopy bounce house.  It was really cute watching Tyler help Katelyn up everytime she bounced and fell.  Tyler's favorite ride that day was a mini roller coaster that he had refused to go on last time I took him.  He liked it so much that he went on it 3 times in a row!  Good thing it was still early and the lines were all super short.  We got there at opening (10am) and left to have lunch by noon and then headed home.  Season passes really are a good idea for us since we never spend more than a couple/few hours there without being exhausted!

Monday. Halloween! Tyler's Pre-4 class doesn't wear their costumes to school.  Tyler was quite bummed about that.  Instead, the whole class dresses up as the same thing - this year they were scarecrows.  Tyler was not feeling the face paint they put on the kids and only allowed his teacher to put a little black triangle on his nose (which quickly rubbed off).  I thought he was cuter this way and looked more like a cowboy anyway.

The kids all go trick or treating across the street at City Hall.  I remember Tyler first doing this when he was in Pre-1 and he was an elephant!  You can see the facepaint that the other kids / teachers had.  I dunno, I wasn't a big fan of the facepaint either and was secretly happy that Tyler didn't get it done.  He got a lot of candy that he won't be eating!

I saw this poster up in their class with the kids' responses to the questions "What happens in Autumn?".  I liked Tyler's answer "There will be pumpkins everywhere and a lot of scary things but its not going to be real."  Very appropriate since Tyler does not like anything scary.  Katelyn, on the other hand, loves to see Halloween things and say "sppoookkkyy" and make oooh and aaaahhh sounds.

Here's a video of Katelyn doing her "spoookkkky" thing.  Her favorite saying now is "Happy Halloween!"

Monday evening we headed over to the Saitos home for a quick dinner and trick or treating.  Tyler was so cute as Captain America!  Seriously, I loved his costume.  Will really tried to convince him to be a Jedi but he could not change Tyler's mind.  Katelyn was a super cute Super Girl too!  But we ended up putting on pants and a long sleeve under her costume since it was so cold.  Last year, at 3, was Tyler's first time really trick or treating.  The year before, as an elephant, he maybe hit up a couple houses on our block.  Katelyn's not even one yet and she got to go with Tyler and his friends.  I guess that's an advantage of having older siblings.  The moms even made these cute little spiderweb cupcakes.

Ready to go!  Notice Katelyn's pumpkin shaped container - it was actually Will's when he was a little kid!

Here's a video of Katelyn trick or treating for the first time!  She would be kind of confused as she waited for all the other kids to clear up, and then walk slowly up to the door.  Of course we always got many "she's so cute!!" comments but I think any little kid doing something wide-eyed for the first time is adorable regardless!

By the time we got home, it had gotten pretty late and I didn't think we would be getting too many trick or treaters at our home.  I had asked Tyler while we were out earlier if he wanted to a) continue trick or treating and risk not being able to give out much candy since it was getting late or b) head home to give out candy while it was still early.  He was very clear about continuing to trick or treat.  Interesting, since he doesn't eat the candy anyway, and I remembered how much he loved giving out candy last year.  We were lucky to get a handful of stragglers and Tyler was super excited everytime the doorbell rang.  He was still quite bummed when I had to convince him that there wouldn't be any more coming though.

We went to Chick-Fil-A on Tuesday for Kids Eat Free only to find out that kids no longer eat free. Aw man!  Anyway, Tyler was really sweet in helping Katelyn play in the playground.  He helped her crawl all the way to the top and kept guard through the tunnels so that the other kids wouldn't run her over.  Really sweet.  And yes, she got a soft serve ice cream cone that I'm sure has dairy in it.  Ugh!  The teachers had mentioned this week that Katelyn hasn't been acting like herself.  They know her as an extremely nice and good listening kid.  Apparently this week she's been quite grumpy and whining.  So much that one day one of the teachers even asked if I could pick her up early since she was just so unhappy and it was totally not like her.  I really believe it's because we have been a little less strict lately with her allergies and in return she's developed some rashes which makes her just overall more grumpy.  Time to be super strict again.  Sorry Katelyn!

This picture was just hilarious since the kids were excitedly zooming around Trader Joes with their little shopping carts.  Katelyn's hard smiles are starting to look a little um, unsettling and mean!  We need to work on that!

And lastly, in a rush on Halloween night, we quickly set up our backdrop/mini photo studio to get some photos of the kids in their costumes (pardon the wrinkled background).  I LOVE Halloween, the kids are so cute in costume!

This was the same Chicken Costume that tyler had worn when he was 1 also.  Katelyn seems to fill it out much nicer though!

Here's Tyler (on the left) and Katelyn (on the right)!

Ladybug costume from Grace!

And lastly, my little princess!

Hope you guys all had a good Halloween!  I don't remember Halloween being too much fun before we had kids, but now it's a totally different ballgame!
