Ouchies and the Circus! (Week 107)

What a week! Tyler has a Thomas and Friends video that he likes to watch where they sing "Accidents Happen" and this is exactly what happened this week. I'm still a bit traumatized by it all. To start, Tyler burned his fingers on some ridiculously hot oatmeal. He eats oatmeal quite often, and for some reason the oatmeal was super hot that weekend. I turned away for a second and Tyler grabbed the spoon and knocked the oatmeal onto the back of his hand. I didn't realize until he started crying hard! We immediately rinsed it under cold water, but the damage was done. About 15-20 min later we noticed blisters had formed. sniff sniff. We immediately headed to the doctor's office (thank goodness it was a Saturday and they have walk in hours in the morning! - closed Sun!). Here's a picture of Tyler and his hand on the drive there. I was already feeling faint seeing those blisters, but I had no clue how much HUGER they were going to get later. By that night, they were almost as thick as half of one of his little fingers. sniff sniff.
Tyler was quite a trooper with this burn. After the initial burn, he didn't even cry at all so we didn't even realize it had blistered. He wasn't too keen on the doctor taking a look at it though. Will entertained Tyler with a blown up glove (chicken and cow imitations) while the nurse applied the medicine and dressing. Poor Tyler. We also had the doctor look at Tyler's right big toe. All the kids insist on taking off their shoes/socks at school (ugh!) and I think Tyler keeps getting the nail run over by a bike or something. It wasn't looking too great either. We left with 2 prescriptions - one for his toe and one for the burn. Here's Tyler with his bandaged hand. He refered to it as 'Tyler's bandy". We get lots of very sympathetic looks when people see it. sniff sniff.
More about accidents later on in the post.

Thanks to our friends Ruby & Howard, Tyler is a total baller. They have one of these basketball hoops and I remember Tyler loving putting balls into them as soon as he could walk. Leave it to Will to teach him a different way though...Will was doing some silly Harlem-Globe-Trotter-style dunk jumps that Tyler thought was hilarious. Here's Tyler with a running start...and still missing because he's laughing so hysterically.
Here's a video clip of Tyler and his insanity when it comes to the basketball hoop. It's like he has to scream and fall on the floor after he throws the ball or something! haha!

This weekend, thanks to our friend Julie, we had free tickets to the Circus! Will and I have NEVER been to the circus, so we were pretty excited. We headed to the Anaheim Honda Center early to see the animals up close and check out the preshow. Here's Tyler and the zebras. He's asking: "Where are the elephants?" since the elephants were in another section outside.
Next stop - the elephants! Oh man Tyler loved them! He kept pointing at them and yelling "Look! Elephant!!"
It was pretty hot outside looking at the elephants though. Tyler was sweating and I could see it glistening in his hair! Poor Tyler! But he didn't seem to mind, too busy enjoying the elephant. With the elephants, he kept doing this sound effect where he blows a raspberry while putting his head down and then up - like an elephant! It was really funny and cute.
Here's a video of Tyler doing his elephant impression. He's doing it right in the beginning and then he does it again about halfway through. He is so silly.

Thank goodness the Arena was super airconditioned. We went into the main floor for the preshow where you can meet the performers and watch some smaller animal performances. Tyler was TOTALLY not into taking pictures with performers. He wouldn't go near a clown (can't really blame him) but not even the pretty dancing girls! Tyler was pretty mad when I moved in to take a picture with this dancer...
After that he was quite weary, and was on the lookout for anyone in exaggerated makeup. I was starting to worry that, eh, maybe Tyler was too young for the circus and wasn't going to enjoy the performances...
Then they brought out a few ponies to run in circles and Tyler was super interested! He stood at the ropes and just stared at the ponies, very mesmerized.
Will and I tried to get another photo with a dancer. I thought I was being tricky by distracting Tyler by pointing to other things while I walked backwards slowly towards the dancer. No luck. Tyler was totally on to me - as soon as I got next to her, he covered his eyes with his hands and wouldn't uncover them until we had moved away (however he was totally peeking through is fingers).
Here's a shot of Tyler after that picture - hiding between my legs! He was so scared!
We decided it was time to head back to the seats and hang out until the show started. First purchase? Circus Snow Cones! I mean, horribly over priced circus snow cones! Each one of those cups was $15! OMG right? Trina and I were in moment though, you know, caught up in the circus excitement! :) Tyler was having a hard time on the chairs, they kept bouncing him up because he wasn't heavy enough to keep it down.
Daddy and Tyler ready for the circus!
Nothing better than circus popcorn! Seriously. Maybe because it's not as salty as we would make it for a movie, but we ate so much of it! Tyler was all about it too, so much that we ended up getting a second box so he could hold his own. heehee. I tried to push the thought of Tyler eating so much popcorn out of my head. Special circumstance!
Here's a video of Tyler when the circus started. All my concerns about him not enjoying it totally went away. He was totally into it - clapping and dancing to the music. I remember thinking earlier in the day that we would leave earlier so we could keep to Tyler's bedtime - but seeing him with such enjoyment made me realize that we were definitely not going to be leaving early!

Lots of circus pictures now! Being my first circus, I didnt' really know what to expect - but I wasn't let down! There were lots of magic/dancing people performances. Fun to watch.
The highlight was definitely the elephants though! They were awesome! I know there has been a lot of talk about the recent PETA video that came out about the abuse of these Asian elephants though. When I first saw the video, I actually had reservations about going, but I did a little research and am not completely convinced that PETA is telling the whole story. Regardless, the elephants were very impressive. Tyler LOVED them!
Check it out! This elephant is doing a hand stand! Craziness!
This was the elephant finale. Kind of out of order, but I wanted ot keep the elephants photos all together. It was set to Indian music and the dancers were in Indian garb.
Also performing, the zebras. Zebras are actually quite cool, I don't think they get enough credit of how cool they are... When we saw them up close before the show, I was surprised at how white their white parts are. Even their hair grows that way!
And the horses...reminds me of our OC Fair visit where we actually paid $1 each to see the 'world's biggest horse'. It was pretty huge.
There were Chinese acrobats as well. Some of them were very young too. This one photo showed a segment that actually got me a little teary - I thought it was really beautiful. Reminded me of watching 'La Reve' at the Wynn in Vegas a couple years back (before Tyler) - there was a part in that show where they released white doves and it totally reminded me of our wedding.
This was, in my opinion, one of the most entertaining parts of the show. The dogs performing tricks! It was GREAT! Who knew watching dogs do silly tricks would be so hilarious! They were SO cute!
About halfway through the show, Tyler's bff Vincent and his family arrived. It was perfect timing too. Tyler had started to get squirmy and was sitting on my lap hugging his face against mine. He was SO excited to see him that he immediately moved to sit with Vincent. Bonus: 2 kids together on the chair keeps them from getting flipped up! ... and keeps him out of my lap! :)
Here's a short clip of the boys watching the Circus together. They are so cute - all the cheering and stuff! There's one moment where Vincent is cheering, he looks over and Tyler isn't, and he's like, "Tyler?" Very cute stuff.

Tigers performing. This was actually a little scary - the tigers seems pretty pissed - you could see them growling and snarling, and some would even bat their paw out at the trainer. Amazingly, they still did all their tricks ... and nothing crazy happened.
The boys didn't stay in their seat for long. As things got more exciting, they jumped up and were actively watching the show. This was a really cute moment - Tyler was cheering and clapping and wanted to make sure Vincent saw what he saw - so he put his arm on Vincent's back and pointed him in the direction of what he was cheering for. It was so cute!
Here's a video clip of Tyler and Vincent with Tyler pointing out to Vincent what he's cheering about!

During the tigers, Tyler wanted to sit on Trina's lap. It was hilarious - he was growling the whole time as he watched the tigers!
After a bit, Vincent ventured over and sat on my lap. When Tyler noticed, he was like 'No Vincent!' and shook his finger. Turns out he didn't want Vincent sitting on my lap - not because he himself wanted to sit on my lap, but just that he didn't want Vincent on my lap! Hmph! After Tyler's second attempt to get Vincent off my lap, Vincent decided that he wanted to share Trina's lap with Tyler! haha! Tyler didn't mind that at all. :)
After the show ended, we headed outside to take some photos. Here's a cheesy photo of Tyler smiling. Hm - hope that won't be a regular thing...
Group picture with the Smiths!
Right after that picture, Tyler was dancing around and fell... on his face... on the floor. Ack! Here's where we get back to accidents. He ended up with a bloody nose! I was panicking because I saw blood in his mouth and I was worried he might have bit his lip with his tooth, but luckily it was from his nose. Yikes. Sigh. Then later, when he was getting into bed, he jumped onto his bed - overshot his pillows - and smacked his forehead right into the WALL! It left a noticeable DENT in the wall! I was starting to feel quite faint. Then today he comes home from school and that right toe from before was completely TORE up from school. It looked like, raw, and pulpy. Will said it looked like I was going to faint...because I felt like I was going to! Sigh. Accidents happen.

Weekly girl picture! Saw a free early screening of the movie Julie/Julia. It was actually a cute movie, unexpectedly cute.
Have a good week everyone! We're getting our synthetic grass and putting green put in this week - pictures to follow next week! :)

Oh man, that is one nasty burn! Its ok kathy, most of us have gotten burns at that age. I still have a scar on my right arm from knocking over a thermos with scalding water. And my scar on my head from when i jumped off the bed...

So cute to see him playing with the basketball hoop! I like how you put him in a jersey while he plays. LOL

The circus looks SOO COOL!!! I think its so wonderful that Tyler has a BFF in Vincent, its so amazing how they can learn from each other.

Next time we go to the beach, you guys are coming with! Tyler wanna hang out with a bunch of girls? :P

Ahhhhh...boys will be boys. The accidents will either:

A) Make Tyler aware and cautious of the same "pre-accident" situations.

or

B) Make him tougher, to try something else the next time around.

Little bruiser that he is, I think it might unfortunately end up being B. Sorry, Mom...

:)

I think that Tyler just has a high-threshold for pain... he quickly forgot about even the pain from the burn.

The bad thing with a high-threshold for pain is that he really doesn't learn and just goes at it harder later!

Here's hoping he doesn't become Steve-O from Jackass!

awww, it's like when you're horoscope says, beware of accidents and then it doesn't stop. Tyler is tough!!!

the circus looks so fun! i thought about taking Jake but thought he might be scared of the clowns and that it might be too loud for brandon. how long was the whole show? the elephants/dogs/zebras animal parts look amazing!
